How to prepare for a home treatment
*A little preparation before your appointment helps create a comfortable, private, and efficient treatment environment.
-
Please clear space the massage table that will be brought into house. Allow for room for therapist to comfortably walk around. I will provide treatment supplies and sheet. You are welcome to utilize your own sheets and/or have warmer blanket positioned on top of sheets to increase your comfort during the treatment.
-
Because Manual Lymphatic Drainage involves direct contact with the skin, please wear clothing that is easy to remove or adjust. Depending on the areas being treated, you may be asked to undress to your comfort level. You will remain appropriately draped with sheets throughout the session, and only the area being treated will be exposed. You are not required to undress beyond your comfort level
-
Please allow access to a sink where the therapist can wash and dry their hands before and after treatment.
-
Staying well hydrated before and after your appointment is encouraged to support your body's normal fluid balance and recovery. Hydration can support normal circulation, kidney function, and overall recovery.
What to expect after manual lymphatic drainage massage
-
Increased urination is common after lymphatic massage. It means that the massage is working!
As fluid moves out of swollen tissues and return to circulation, your kidneys may process more fluid, which can temporarily increase how often you need to urinate. This may occur for several hours after treatment and can be a normal sign that your body is responding to the fluid shift.
-
Your immune system is working hard after MLD. Some people feel tired, relaxed, or mildly drained after manual lymphatic drainage as a result. This may be related to the deeply relaxing nature of treatment, big changes in fluid distribution, and the body shifting into a more restful state after therapy.
Mild fatigue is generally short-lived. However, fever, chills, significant body aches, worsening redness, warmth, or rapidly increasing swelling are not expected treatment effects and should be medically evaluated as they are signs and symptoms of an infection. This is particularly important to note if you have lymphedema because you are at an increased risk for cellulitis which is an infection of the skin.
MLD is contraindicated with current infection, suspected or untreated blood clot (DVT), acute or uncontrolled heart failure, or acute kidney failure.
-
Some people experience mild soreness or tenderness MLD especially in areas that are swollen, fibrotic, or sensitive.
This should be temporary and generally improves within a day. Significant pain, worsening swelling, redness, or warmth is not expected and should be evaluated.
-
Some people may experience temporary lightheadedness or dizziness after manual lymphatic drainage, especially when sitting or standing up after a relaxing treatment. This can be related to changes in fluid distribution.
Take your time getting up after treatment, drink water, and avoid driving until you feel steady. Persistent, severe, or worsening dizziness is not considered a normal treatment response and should be medically evaluated.
